The USC Department of Surgery encompasses organized divisions in Thoracic, Foregut and Bariatric surgery; hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgery and liver transplantation; Tumor and Endocrine surgery (programs in breast, pancreatic and endocrine surgery); colorectal surgery; trauma surgery; plastic surgery; emergency and minimally invasive surgery; vascular surgery and pediatric surgery. Each year, more than $1 million in extramural grants supports the department's long tradition of involvement in both basic and clinical research. A number of research studies are conducted in collaboration with other departments of the School of Medicine, including the Department of Medicine and its divisions of gastrointestinal and liver diseases, infectious diseases, and oncology.

The primary locations of the department's programs are the USC University Hospital, USC/Norris Cancer Hospital, Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, and the LAC+USC Medical Center. Members of the department are also basic and clinical research at other USC-affiliated hospitals, including the Hospital of the Good Samaritan, the Veterans Administration Outpatient Clinic in Los Angeles, and Huntington Memorial Hospital, Pasadena.
