You Get Stuck |
| |
(Remember that a splash to the eyes, mucous membranes or non-intact skin surfaces by contaminated fluid is also considered exposure and should be treated as such)
What do you do? |
| |
| STEP 1 |
Wash with soap and water 3-5 minutes |
Obtain source patient information (name, date of birth, medical record number, address, phone number) and any prior testing (HIV, Hep B, Hep C, RPR) |
Obtain risk factors-gather as much information from the chart or patient as possible, as quickly as possible |
If known HIV positive-get information on CD4 count, opportunistic infections, prior TX and resistance. |
| |
| |
| STEP 2 |
| Time is your enemy |
Under 2 hours to time of 1st dose of medication is optimal |
3-4 hours is considered standard |
Up to 36 hours you might still consider prophylaxis |
After 36 hours prophylaxis is not recommended. We monitor for Acute Syndrome, then treat for possible clearance of the HIV |
