Robotic-Assisted MAZE Surgery

Robotic-assisted MAZE surgery is a minimally invasive method for curing atrial fibrillation with the help of a robot, like the da Vinci Surgical System . The procedure is performed without dividing the sternum (sternotomy) or stopping the heart, and without the need for a heart-lung machine.

During the procedure, small incisions are made between the ribs. The surgeon uses video guided instruments to manipulate a catheter and perform the ablations. The catheter directs cryo-freeze or microwave energy to precise areas in the heart tissue to create lesions that block erratic electrical signals from traveling through the heart.

By using a robotic system that incorporates 3D vision and microsurgical instruments, the surgeon is able to make smaller incisions and perform the procedure with greater precision. This minimizes trauma, helping the patient heal better and faster, with less pain and complications.
