Lung Surgery Patient Guide

Lungs and air passages.Lung Disease

What Causes Lung Disease?

As you breathe, you take in the oxygen needed to allow your pulmonary system to function. However, with every breath you take, your lungs are also exposed to airborne bacteria, viruses and allergens, all of which can potentially cause lung disorders. Although minor irritants may only affect your breathing temporarily, irritants or disease can cause severe lung damage and greatly endanger your respiratory health.

What are Some Examples of Lung Disease?

Severe asthma, lung cancer, emphysema (damage to the millions of tiny air sacs in the lungs due to smoking), and cystic fibrosis (a genetic disorder that causes chronic lung infections) are among the more serious lung diseases or respiratory problems which may require specialized treatment. It is important to diagnose these disorders early in order to treat them more effectively.

What are Some of the Symptoms That May Indicate Lung Disease?

A variety of symptoms indicate that you may need to visit a pulmonologist about possible lung disease. Among those symptoms are difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, or coughing that lasts longer than a normal cold or continuously produces green mucus. As soon as symptoms suggest a respiratory illness worse than a common cold or allergy, or become difficult to diagnose, patients and primary physicians are encouraged to consult a pulmonary specialist.
