Dr. Kaufman is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
He serves as Chief of the Division of Colorectal and Pelvic Floor
Surgery, as well as, Chief of General Surgery at USC University
Hospital. Dr. Kaufman has clinical expertise in treating patients
with pelvic
floor dysfunction, as well as expertise in a variety of
benign and malignant diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus including
cancer, ulcerative colitis, constipation, incontinence, and diverticulitis.
He is a member of the USC
Bariatric Program and offers open and laparoscopic surgical
options to patients suffering from morbid obesity. He also performs
laparoscopic and robotic surgery for other abdominal and pelvic
disorders.
Patients with pelvic floor dysfunction are treated with a multidisciplinary approach. The team of specialists treating this patient population is led by Dr. Kaufman, with collaboration from gynecology, urology, gastroenterology, behavioral sciences, physical therapy, and radiology.
Dr. Kaufman’s primary clinical and research interests are in multimodality treatment of rectal cancer, the multidisciplinary treatment of pelvic floor disorders, and the correlation between obesity and pelvic floor dysfunction.
Dr. Kaufman graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Haverford College where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology and Physics. He attended the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and did his surgical training, research fellowship, and fellowship in alimentary tract surgery at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Kaufman remained on the faculty of The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and held a triple appointment as Associate Professor in the Departments of Surgery, Gynecology and Obstetrics, and Oncology, until 2002. His colorectal training included study under the mentorship of Professor Neil Mortensen, Director of the Colorectal Unit at Oxford University, as well as a colorectal experience during his Johns Hopkins fellowship. Dr. Kaufman pursued an MBA degree at the Johns Hopkins University, culminating his studies at the USC Marshall School of Business and the School of Planning, Policy, and Development at University Park. He received his degree in May 2004.
He is a member of several national societies including The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, The Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, The Association for Academic Surgery, The Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, and is a fellow of The American College of Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology.
