ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Machine)

ECMO stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine. The ECMO circuit is literally a temporary artificial lung and heart that is modeled on the heart-lung bypass machine used for open-heart surgery. ECMO can be used for patients in heart failure and in patients who cannot get enough oxygen to their body through their lungs.
