HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound)

During the HIFU procedure, a high-energy convergent ultrasound beam produces heat and is applied to specific areas of cardiac tissue to create lesions. These lesions, which do not conduct electricity, disrupt the path of abnormal electrical impulses. By adjusting power and wavelength, the energy is focused to ablate precise areas of cardiac tissue without impacting surrounding tissue or blood vessels.

Because the surgeon already has access to the patient's heart, often the HIFU procedure is concomitant surgery, being performed with another surgery such as cardiac valve replacement or repair, or coronary artery bypass.
