Dr. Kaplowitz, Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease, received his medical degree from NYU, where he spent eight months during his senior year doing research in porphyrin metabolism under the direction of Dr. Norman Javitt.
Dr. Kaplowitz spent a year as a guest investigator conducting research in porphyrin biochemistry at Rockefeller University, and then another year-long fellowship in gastroenterology at Cornell University Medical College. He joined the USC School of Medicine in 1990 to head the Division of Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease.
In 1995, Dr. Kaplowitz became principal investigator and director of the NIH-sponsored USC Center for Liver Disease research. This is one of four liver center grants in the United States. It is a $5 million/five-year grant focused on liver disease.
Dr. Kaplowitz's research interests include the characterization of the cellular and membrane transport and regulation of glutathione in the liver and brain and the pathogenesis of alcohol-related liver disease and toxin/drug-induced liver disease, a topic in which he is considered an international expert.
