The USC Center
for Pancreatic and Biliary Diseases was established in 1993 to provide specialized
expertise in pancreatic cancer surgery (including the Whipple surgery), laparoscopic
and robotic surgery for pancreatic, endocrine and bile duct disorders, treatment
of pancreatitis and clinical protocols for pancreatic and bile duct cancer.
We provide specialized expertise in the following areas
Whipple
operation
We offer specialized expertise in the Whipple operation for pancreatic and periampullary
cancers. Over the past nine years we have had few complications and no deaths
in more than 100 consecutive cases of the Whipple operations. Dilip Parekh M.D.
has recently performed the first hand assisted laparoscopic Whipple operation
at USC.
Laparoscopic
surgery
Laparoscopic surgery is performed through small incisions and allows rapid recovery,
less pain and early return to work compared to open surgery. Laparoscopic operations
are offered for pancreas and liver resection (removal), Whipple operation, pseudocyst
drainage, gall bladder and bile duct surgery, removal of endocrine tumors.
Preservation
of pancreatic tissue in pancreatic and biliary surgery
Radical surgery is not indicated for many benign (non cancerous) and precancerous
pancreatic and periampullary diseases. We offer specialized surgical procedures
to preserve pancreatic tissue and the duodenum that often avoid the Whipple
operation
Specialized services for severe pancreatitis
We are a referral center for critically ill patients with acute pancreatitis
with complications such as pancreatic necrosis and pancreatic abscesses.We offer
a specialized laparoscopic procedure for removal of the necrotic (dead) pancreatic
tissue to promote early recovery.
Specialty
services for chronic pancreatitis.
We offer specialized expertise to treat complications of chronic pancreatitis
such as severe chronic pain, pseudocysts and diabetes. We offer a unique surgical
operation, in which only the head of the pancreas is removed preserving the
duodenum and the bile duct (thereby avoiding the Whipple operation). Laparoscopic
procedures offered include peustow procedure(drainage of pancreatic duct) and
drainage of pseudocyst.
Bloodless
surgery
The practice of bloodless surgery involves surgical care without transfusion
of blood products. Blood surgical techniques are the standard practice of Center
Surgeons for complex pancreatic and biliary operations.
Abdominal
endocrine tumors
Specialized diagnostic techniques available to localize these small tumors include
volume rendering CT scanning, portal venous sampling, octreotide scans and endoscopic
ultrasonography. Specialized surgical expertise in laparoscopic surgical resection
is offered where appropriate.
Specialized
interventional gastrointestinal expertise
Procedures offered include stenting and sphincterotomy of the pancreatic
duct, motility studies of the sphincter of oddi, endoscopic pseudocyst drainage,
endoscopic ultrasonography with biopsy and pain management.
Clinical
protocols for advanced and metastatic cancers
Specialized
chemotherapy protocols
are offered through the Norris Cancer Center for advanced or surgical inoperable
pancreatic cancer to shrink
large tumors not amenable to surgery.
