Things You can do to Reduce Your Risk of Hypertension or Suffering a Heart or Stroke (Brain Attack)

  • Control your blood pressure
  • Find out if you have heart disease, in particular atrial fibrillation, carotid artery disease or diabetes, and follow your doctor’s advice for treatment
  • Lower your cholesterol level
  • If you smoke, stop; if you don’t smoke, don’t start
  • Limit your alcohol consumption
  • Control your weight
  • Exercise
  • Eat low fat-cholesterol foods
  • Decrease sodium in diet

By following your doctor’s advice and controlling your risk factors, approximately 80% of heart and brain attacks may be preventable.
