Vascular Disease Screening

Warning Signs of Hypertension

  • An inordinate rise in blood pressure (morning surge) on awakening, and even more after arising; or
  • No drop in blood pressure (non dipper) after midnight; or
  • High blood pressure only in the doctor’s office (white coat hypertension); or
  • Normal blood pressure in the doctor’s office (white coat normotensive), but high pressure outside in the patient’s regular surroundings;
  • Headaches
  • Nosebleeds
  • Heartbeat sensations
  • Ear noise/ buzzing

If severe, symptoms may include:

  • Tiredness
  • Confusion
  • Vision changes
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Anxiety
  • Excessive perspiration
  • Pale skin, or redness of the face or other areas
  • Muscle tremors
  • Angina-like pain (crushing chest pain)

If you experience any of these symptoms, or recognize them in someone else, call 911 immediately, even if the symptoms only last for a short time. Early diagnosis ensures the best chance for effective treatment of a heart or brain attack. Remember, every minute counts.
