Warning Signs of Hypertension
- An inordinate rise in blood pressure (morning surge) on awakening, and even more after arising; or
- No drop in blood pressure (non dipper) after midnight; or
- High blood pressure only in the doctor’s office (white coat hypertension); or
- Normal blood pressure in the doctor’s office (white coat normotensive), but high pressure outside in the patient’s regular surroundings;
- Headaches
- Nosebleeds
- Heartbeat sensations
- Ear noise/ buzzing
If severe, symptoms may include:
- Tiredness
- Confusion
- Vision changes
- Nausea, vomiting
- Anxiety
- Excessive perspiration
- Pale skin, or redness of the face or other areas
- Muscle tremors
- Angina-like pain (crushing chest pain)
If you experience any of these symptoms, or recognize them in someone else, call 911 immediately, even if the symptoms only last for a short time. Early diagnosis ensures the best chance for effective treatment of a heart or brain attack. Remember, every minute counts.
