Pharynx

The pharynx is located behind the mouth and nose and functions to route inhaled or swallowed material into either the trachea or esophagus. Pharyngeal dysfunction may be combined with dysfunction of the upper esophageal sphincter to produce dysphagia, or difficulty with swallowing. In some cases this leads to the development of a diverticulum.
