Yuri Genyk, M.D.

Professor of Clinical Surgery
Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Abdominal Organ Transplantation
Keck School of Medicine of USC

Dr. Genyk is Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Abdominal Organ Transplantation at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.  Dr. Genyk completed his medical school at the Ivano-Frankivsk Medical Institute in Ukraine. His postgraduate training involved research in liver transplantation and microsurgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.  He completed his surgical residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and his subspecialty training in Abdominal Organ Transplantation and Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.  Dr. Genyk joined USC in 1998. He is the Director of Abdominal Organ Transplantation at Keck Medical Center of USC and Surgical Director of the Pediatric Liver/Intestinal Transplant Program at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

Dr. Genyk’s main areas of interest and expertise include:

  • Novel operative techniques in surgical management of locally advanced pancreatic cancer.
Generally, locally advanced pancreatic cancer is considered unresectable, especially when it involves major abdominal vein and arteries. Dr. Genyk developed surgical strategies and techniques to perform pancreatic resection with simultaneous resection of major visceral arteries and veins with vascular reconstruction. USC is the pioneering center in the United States in performing advanced and multiple arterial and venous reconstructions for pancreatic cancer.
  • Advanced liver resection and liver transplantation for benign and malignant liver tumors.
Dr. Genyk developed surgical strategies for multi-segmental liver resections that also include vascular resections with reconstructions and liver transplantation.
  • Living donor liver transplantation.
Dr. Genyk pioneered living donor liver transplantation on the West Coast. The USC living donor liver transplant program is one of the largest in the United States.
  • Pediatric liver transplantation.
The pediatric liver transplant program at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles is one of the largest programs in the United States.
