Keck School of Medicine of USC

Dr. Parekh is a Professor of Clinical Surgery in the Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Dr. Parekh completed his medical school and residency in Johannesburg, South Africa and then spent 2 years in a fellowship in gastrointestinal surgery research in the Department of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston Texas. Dr. Parekh is the Section Chief for Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic surgery in the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery and the Director of the USC Center for Pancreatic and Biliary Diseases. Dr. Parekh is also responsible for coordinating all of the cancer programs in the Department of Surgery

Dr. Parekh’s main areas of interest and expertise include:

  1. Novel operative techniques in the management of benign and malignant disorders of the pancreas. Dr. Parekh’s main interest has been in developing techniques to preserve pancreatic tissue in patients with benign disorders of the pancreas such as neuroendocrine tumors, IPMN and cystic neoplasms. USC offers novel surgical procedures such as complete a resection of the head of the pancreas with preservation of the duodenum and bile duct (thereby avoiding the Whipple operation) and enucleation of cystic and endocrine neoplasms of the head of the pancreas.
  2. Laparoscopic pancreatic surgery. Dr. Parekh is one of the pioneers of laparoscopic pancreatic surgery and has performed the world’s first laparoscopic Frey operation, laparoscopic total pancreatic head resection, and laparoscopic hand-assisted Whipple operation. Dr. Parekh has one of the largest experiences in the world in laparoscopic pancreatic surgery including the Whipple operation, distal pancreatectomy, enucleation of pancreatic tumors and laparoscopic treatment of chronic and acute pancreatitis.
  3. Laparoscopic liver surgery. Dr. Parekh has pioneered laparoscopic liver surgery and probably the largest experience on the West Coast. USC offers laparoscopic liver procedures such as hepatectomy, wedge resections, and complex biliary bypass procedure.
