MS Year II ICM Focus Experience

The purpose of this learning experience is to introduce students to basic knot tying and suturing techniques. We offer 1-2 sessions a month from September through April based on staff availability. By the end of the session, the student should be able to:

  • demonstrate the appropriate use of suture equipment (needle holder, pick-ups, scissors)
  • demonstrate the ability to tie a two-handed knot
  • demonstrate the ability to perform an instrument tie
  • demonstrate the proper technique for closing a wound
  • simple interrupted
  • simple continuous
  • vertical mattress

Each course proceeds with a brief introduction to wound healing, knot tying, suturing materials, and suturing techniques followed by instruction and practice on knot tying and basic suture techniques. Students will divide into groups of six. Each station takes approximately 30 minutes. There will be an instructor to provide a brief introduction, demonstrate the appropriate technique, and provide student feedback on each technical skill.
