Jeffrey A. Hagen, M.D.

Jeffrey A. Hagen, M.D.
Chief, Division of Thoracic Surgery
Director, General Surgery Residency Program
Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California

Dr. Jeffrey A. Hagen, MD is Chief of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He specializes in the field of General Thoracic Surgery, which encompasses benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus, lungs, mediastinum and pleura/chest wall. He has extensive experience in both complex open surgical procedures and in the field of minimally invasive surgery of the chest. The Division of Thoracic Surgery that he leads is nationally and internationally recognized for their experience in esophageal and foregut surgery, contributing hundreds of papers, review articles and book chapters to our knowledge of the field.

He leads the team of surgeons at the Keck Hospital of USC in the rapidly expanding robotic thoracic surgery program using the Da Vinci system. This approach allows the surgeons to perform resections of the lungs (lobectomy) and tumors of the mediastinum (such as thymoma) with greater precision than can be achieved using standard VATS techniques and less discomfort and shorter hospital stays than traditional open surgery. Dr. Hagen also leads the USC Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Management Program – one of the few programs in the country where a truly multi-specialty clinic exists to efficiently evaluate patients known or suspected to have cancer of the lung. Patients can be simultaneously seen by specialists in Thoracic Surgery, Medical Oncology, Pulmonary Medicine and/or Radiation Oncology to allow us to provide the ultimate in comprehensive and personalized care to our patients.

Dr. Hagen completed his General Surgery training at Creighton University before pursuing specialty training in Esophageal and Foregut Surgery at the University of Southern California under the guidance of Dr. Tom DeMeester. He then obtained his Thoracic Surgery training at the Barnes Hospital - Washington University program in St. Louis before joining the faculty at USC in 1994.

Dr. Hagen’s research interests include assessment of predictors of outcome in the management of cancer of the esophagus and non-small cell cancer of the lung. He is also investigating strategies for early detection of lung cancer using unique DNA methylation signatures for lung cancer developed at USC. He has presented at numerous national and international medical and surgical societies, he serves on the review panels for more than a dozen scientific journals and he has more than 100 peer reviewed publications.
